Athens Twilight '05

One six-pack of Pacifico: $7.00
One bucket of ice: $1.00
One steak Cubano hold the mayo: $5.00
The cleavage at Caliente Cab: Priceless.

Sorry, had to start it that way, as it was a joke that needed to be made.

Yesterday afternoon I jetted out to Athens, as Athens Twilight '05 was happening and one of my all-time favorite bands (Cracker. That's Cracker with a "C," not a "K" or an "Uncle," understand?) was playing for free in the heart of downtown Athens, GA (The birthplace of R.E.M). I have to give a shout out to Pete "I Think Elves Are Hot" LeBlond for letting me know the Cracker Soul was running through town.

Anyways, I jetted out there in time for us to catch Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy via Fandango and grab some dinner. Let me just say the movie was excellent, even as a die-hard fan of the book, I have to give them credit. But dinner. Man, oh, Man was dinner something. We went to some shack called Caliente Cab that had the best Cubanos I've ever had, gorgeous girls everywhere, friendly waitresses, gravel for floors, umbrellaed tables, buckets of ice & limes for $2, a fucking creek running through it, and to top it all off, it's B.Y.O.B. How the Hell do you top that? You don't, you just grab a six-pack or Pacifico and enjoy yourself. That's what you do.

After that, we made it into town and searched and searched and searched for a free parking space until we finally just said to Hell with it and paid two bucks for a one. Sometimes Athens is a pain, but it made up for itself in one fail swoop. It presented the Beer Pen. The Beer Pen was a makeshift bar that was built in the middle of the street to make it easier for the concert goers to get a little fuzzy during the show. Given, there are only like 200 bars in Athens (You can see a short list of them here), but two steps to a beer is better than ten, so the Beer Pen was born. I call it the Beer Pen because it looked like a huge play pen, but with a bunch of drinkers and a car parked inside of it. Excellent is all I can say about that. It was a pretty stellar night in the A-Town, bottom line.
